European Public Prosecutor's Office: a victory for European Democrats!

The President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, announced on Wednesday 12 September, during his speech on the State of the Union, that the powers of the European Public Prosecutor's Office should be extended to include terrorism.

French MEP and Chairwoman of the Special Commission on Terrorism Nathalie Griesbeck has, since the beginning of the discussions on the creation of the European Public Prosecutor's Office, defended a broad and ambitious mandate, including a right of inquiry into cross-border cases related to terrorism. Terrorists know no borders: European judicial investigations cannot therefore stop at the territorial limits of States.

She welcomes the solemn announcement by the President of the Commission: "After years of negotiations within the European institutions, I welcome this relevant and necessary proposal. This is a fundamental step in our ambition to build a genuine European area of freedom, security and justice. An authority capable of European prosecution, particularly in the field of terrorism, is essential in this context! ».
