The European Democrats have learned with emotion and sorrow of the death of the former President of the French Republic and former Chairman of the Convention on the Future of Europe, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing.

François Bayrou, President of the European Democratic Party, pays tribute to him: "Valéry Giscard d'Estaing had all the skills. He dominated, almost naturally, by his presence, his distinction, the vivacity of his intelligence, the strength of his intuitions. For whole generations, especially for those who committed themselves to him in their youth, he brought a great wind of modernity to French society, an immense hope of surpassing oneself and bringing people together. And for some of us, who shared his struggles when times became more difficult, there remain immense memories of shared intelligence and laughter, as well as great nostalgia. This unique and eminent man, perhaps often too far ahead of his time, gave French democracy a great contribution" and also added that: "he was deeply attached to the History of France. He was certain that only Europe was our horizon'.

Marielle de Sarnez, Secretary General of the European Democratic Party, who entered politics during Valéry Giscard d'Estaing's victorious presidential campaign, reminds us that: "This intuition of Valéry Giscard d'Estaing was correct in 1974. It is even more true today in times of crisis. We won't solve any of our country's major problems as long as we remain divided and opposed".
