French MEP Marie-Pierre Vedrenne (MoDem), co-chair of the European Parliament's Renaissance delegation and vice-chair of the European Parliament's International Trade Committee, has praised the EU's record on trade defence in an op-ed in France's Journal du Dimanche. Here is an extract:

As early as his speech at the Sorbonne (2017), Emmanuel Macron mapped out a path for a more united, greener and more sovereign Europe. "Europe must be free to make its own choices and master its own destiny", the French President recently reminded us in the European hemicycle in Strasbourg. At a time of increasing geopolitical tensions, tade reciprocity that Emmanuel Macron wanted is now a reality: our social and environmental standards will no longer be the adjustment variable in our trade. Indeed, the European Union is strengthening its legal arsenal more and more each day in order to play on equal terms with states that do not respect the rules of the game.
