One Ocean Summit: the EU has confirmed its leading role in preserving marine biodiversity

Our Group at the European Parliament, Renew Europe, which was represented at a high level at the One Ocean Summit this week in Brest, fully associates itself with the Parliamentary Declaration of this international conference organised by the French Presidency of the Council of the EU.

It is indeed high time for the international community to adopt a legally binding instrument allowing the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity. This is the only way to preserve marine ecosystems and foster resilience to climate change. Renew Europe welcomes the pioneering role of the European Union in this struggle for the future of the ocean in the field of the fight against plastic pollution. European legislation can be the basis of a binding international legal framework to limit plastic pollution.

French MEP Catherine CHABAUD (MoDem), navigator and expert in marine biodiversity, member of the parliamentary committees for Fisheries and for Environment, added: “Let’s take advantage of the One Ocean Summit and the French Presidency of the Council to build an ocean union together!“
