The European Parliament voted in favour of the trilogue agreement by the Commission and the Council on establishing a European Labour Authority (ELA), which aims to help strengthen fairness and trust in the Single Market.

The ELA should assist Member States on solving disputes, using a mediation process, and on concerted and joint inspections. It would also enhance cooperation between the countries tackling undeclared work and improve the dissemination of information to individuals and companies on rights and obligations regarding labour mobility.

Irish MEP Marian Harkin, shadow rapporteur on this file for ALDE group, said: “I believe this final piece of legislation addresses many of the identified problems around the day to day operation of free movement of workers. By doing so, it will facilitate more streamlined systems because of greater cooperation between Member States , a system of free movement that benefits all EU workers, which will help restore trust in the system of free movement , trust between Member States and trust between citizens and to me this is the most important issue at this time and it will be in the future.”
