Dutch referendum: a worrying signal
After the referendum in the Netherlands on the association agreement between Ukraine and the European Union, the EDP Secretary General Marielle de Sarnez declared:
"This result is alarming vis-à-vis Ukraine who vitally needs us. This neighbouring country expects from the EU a closer cooperation and especially the signal that we are at its side to help it out of its difficulties, to help for reforms, to help in fighting corruption. Yet, it is the opposite signal that has been sent.
It is worrying because it highlights self-withdrawal, national egoism and exacerbated fears that are always bad advisers.
When the European Union is going through the most serious crisis in its history, it is more than ever before time to reaffirm our shared commitment to European solidarity. The European project needs consideration. We need to build a more democratic Europe for the citizens, a more effective Europe to face the challenges of globalization. It is therefore my hope that the Heads of State and Government will quickly sit around the table and rise to this new challenge".
