Creating a platform of ideas, proposals and projects capable of refounding the European Union

Conference in Rome
Gabriel Stabinger

On Saturday the 6th of October, the initiative of European Democratic Party "Idee proeuropee" which aimed at creating a platform of ideas, proposals and projects capable of refounding the European Union was held in Rome. Many guests were invited by Francesco RUTELLI, founder and co-president of EDP, and promoter of the European meeting: among them, Paolo GENTILONI, former Italian Prime Minister, David SASSOLI, Vice-President of the European Parliament, François PAULI, Benedetto Della VEDOVA, coordinator of +Europa, Enrico GIOVANNINI, former President of Istat. There were also many speakers: among others Angelo RUGHETTI, Alessandro MARAN, Franco BRUNO, Luigi COCILOVO, Lucia ESPOSITO, Gabriele MOLINARI, Giovanni PALLADINO, Claudio ROSI, Gianluca SUSTA, Marco BENTIVOGLI, Lucio ROMANO, Pino PISICCHIO, Irene TIGNALI.

The conference was an opportunity to reflect on European integration, on the ideals that led to the birth of the Union and on the pillars that govern it. Today, the problems facing the Union are real challenges: it has to face the weakness of leadership and the scarcity of supranational powers, the lack of a common migration policy, the lack of fiscal harmonisation, the economic differences between the Member States, a budget that is too small to tackle social inequalities and to combat the financial liberalism that has undermined the real economy. Responding to these challenges means rediscovering the political values of Europe and its fundamental contribution to peace, progress and security on our continent.

Talking about Europe requires a serious discussion in view of the European elections to be held on 26 May 2019: the risk of seeing Euroscepticism become the driving force behind the future composition of the European Parliament is serious. The most motivated voters cannot be those who do not believe in European integration. For this reason, "Pro-European Ideas" has brought together those who are fighting for a stronger, more democratic Europe, for a broad pro-European coalition that saves Europe by proposing to change it.
